How to audition for reality TV shows
Posted September 29, 2008
Are you interested in getting on a reality TV show? Regular people with no acting experience can find a way “in” to the television industry by auditioning for a reality TV program. While a few shows, like “American Idol”, have huge cattle-call events for auditions in major cities, you can apply for many reality programs from the comfort of your own home. There is no one place to go to apply to be on all reality TV shows. Most shows will have a link on their website with information about how to apply. Typical requirements include filling in a detailed application, sending photos, providing photo ID, and sending a videotape audition to the show. Some shows may require that you live near the show (typically, they require that you live in the state of California), but many shows do not have specific geographical requirements for contestants.
For example, the information for applying for many ABC reality shows is available at: http://abc.go.com/site/casting.html This includes auditions for Wife Swap, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, Supernanny, and more. For NBC shows, there is also a single web page for information: http://www.nbc.com/Casting/ If you are interested in other shows, the best place to check is the website for that show or its network. Keep in mind that reality TV is not always recruiting for talent; they generally only will be looking for contestants within a few months before filming a particular season. If your favorite reality TV show has no mention of current casting, check back in a month or two. Try and get on all the networks mailing lists.
