“The 2006 Scripps National Spelling Bee” (8 p.m., WXYZ-TV, Channel 7, ABC). Spell check championship. America’s largest and longest-running educational contest is ready for its first prime-time close-up. Robin Roberts from “Good Morning America” hosts the two-hour championship round of the beloved “Bee.” For serious spelling fans, early rounds of finals competition air 12-3 p.m. on ESPN.

Five local entries gain state 
MOLALLA - All five members of the Jefferson State rodeo team used the final competition of the regular season to solidufy their berths into the Oregon High School Rodeo Association state finals.

Tariq Aziz Testifies For Saddam 
Former Iraqi Defense Minister Tariq Aziz took the stand Wednesday on behalf of his former boss, ex-Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. Aziz, now 70, appeared frail and testified wearing only checkered pajamas.

A&E hopes for ratings lift from Angel 
A&E hopes to levitate its ratings with the second showcase of Criss Angel Mindfreak (9 p.m., A&E). Angel has been named Magician of the Year for three years. For his first act, Angel will attempt to levitate and move from the top of one building to another.

On Cable TV, Relief From the Doldrums 
The TV world turns upside down this summer, as the big broadcast networks open the spillway to a torrent of cheesy reality shows, while cable channels trot out meaty comedy and drama with high production values.

Tube Notes 
“Gameshow Marathon” debut, 7 p.m., CBS. The good news is that networks are livening up the summer. CBS has the clever notion of taking C-list celebrities and zipping them through different game shows in a tournament. The bad news is that this starts tonight with “The Price is Right.”

Gift Bag Signed by Stage Stars at AIDS Walk Now on Auction Block 
At the 21st Annual AIDS Walk New York on May 21, participating celebrities were given gift bags donated for the occasion. In exchange, said boldface types signed their John Hancocks to one special gift bag. The sachel is currently being auctioned on eBay, with all proceeds going to the Gay Men’s Health Crisis.
